  1. Sorry I’m a week late to this, but as The Conjuring (the original) is my #5 Horror Movie of All-Time, I felt a need to ramble a bit. I really like The Conjuring 2, and I think all of you had valid points about the jump scares. Channy is correct that some aren’t earned, and Jay and Watson are correct in that more often than not, they work in context, so it is OK. That being said, the one thing I feel the sequel doesn’t nail as much as the original is something I’ve dubbed “One Scare More” (because, yes, I like Les Miserables AND horror movies). In the original, Wan does an amazing job of using jump scares to release tension only to terrify you with other horror later in the scene. Hence…one scare more. Whereas most run-of-the-mill horror movies are happy to just build to and get you with the jump scare, Wan does not in The Conjuring. He lets you think you are emotionally safe only to pound you with more scares in the same scene. The best example of this I think is when the pictures fall off the wall of the stairs. It is a great jump scare, but it is only setting up the horror that is to come up those stairs. In this way, The Conjuring is unrelenting, which is why I love it. The sequel hits this One Scare More idea a few times (The Nun scene comes directly to mind.), but I don’t think it’s as organic and relentless as the original. Oh…and Jay is right. That nun is terrifying!

    1. I love the Conjuring movies, man, and I absolutely love your assessment of that first one! You’re spot on, dude! Damn! Ha ha. The Conjuring COULD be my favorite haunted house movie… not sure… it’s high on that list, though, if not! Thanks for taking the time to comment, dude. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts about the other movies we’ve got coming for ya!

PS: Just followed you on Instagram!
