Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 110: We Need to Do Something 2021

Welcome to Episode 110 of Horror Movie Weekly, One Badass Horror Podcast… Your intrepid, Triad of Terror hosts — Jay of the Dead, Mister Watson, and Projectile Varmint — bring you a Feature Review of We Need to Do Something (2021). And of course, your hosts bring you their famous Micro Horror Movie Reviews of “Honeydew” (2021), “Willy’s Wonderland” (2021), and “No One Gets Out Alive” (2021). We talk about our 2021 watchlists (because when this was recorded, we were preparing for our Top 10 show). Also, Jay of the Dead gives a public confession about an addiction he’s grappling with… (half kidding, half serious). Remember, you’re always welcome to call and leave us a voicemail at (801) 215-9704. By the way, Jay of the Dead, Mister Watson and Projectile Varmint are all BFFs because of their mutual contempt and resentment for the TV show “LOST.” Also, Jay asks his co-hosts to be two of his pallbearers during this episode.

Note: This episode was recorded on November 22, 2021, and was released on January 24, 2022.

This weekly Horror movie podcast brings you one recent Horror movie review every Sunday. (We’re defining “recent” as any Horror movie released within the last five years, so now that it’s 2022, we’ll be covering Horror films from 2017 to the present.) And we always reveal next week’s pick at the end of every show, so you can watch along with us and be prepared for the following episode. Join us, and thanks for listening!

This one came so close to being good…

I ended up with a 4 out of 10 as well, but I don’t think it’s worthless. It’s just incomplete. I’m OK with a lack of exposition or needing to piece things together, so a lot of what happened along the way is ok as long as it leads somewhere. I was able to understand how the parental relationship may have fractured over time, or who they were referring to when the parents were tying not to name a person who may have been coming to help, and even the whole flashback narrative with the girlfriend could have been illuminating and engaging if the movie had stuck the landing… or even had a landing to stick.

No Country for Old Men has a perfect ending for what the novel and film are doing with that story and it’s deeper look at that sort of genre story, so I don’t think that comparison is apt at all. This movie has several strands that all lead to a point, and them they all just get cut off. It’s maddening, and not at all on a good way.

It wasn’t perfect in the lead up, but it kept me engaged until the end because I was genuinely interested in how it would all come together a what the answer to what was really happening was going to be. I’m all for a subversion of expectations, but you’ve gotta gimme something, anything, to make it worth the while.

This movie is about 5 extra minutes from being worth the trouble.

Anyway…

Not sure why Connecticut is so hilarious to Jay. We native Connecitcutians are just people Jay.

Fred from CT-

First, hello neighbor. I can see how this movie can be frustrating but at least it kept you engaged.

Interesting about the ending. I thought it was very non-eventful for a movie that had a lot of other crazy stuff happening. Now that I’ve processed the film more I am not that into the ending and perhaps was a little too generous with my score of 9.

Thankfully I’ll never revisit this film but do think it has its merits.

Thanks for listening and commenting.
