  1. Hey HMW crew! So after looking into some of the folklore and background of Roh or Soul I came up with a few explanations as best as I could. You may have already pieced together some of these so forgive me for any redundance.

    Spoiler warning

Ok so Tok is most likely Iblis, who is a similar figure to Lucifer in Islam. Iblis was an angel who fell from grace, the main difference from Satan is that Iblis isn’t all bad. It’s said that Iblis is still part of it’s creator and isn’t inherently evil. This was all foreshadowed by that quote at the beginning of the movie. Hopefully I didn’t butcher that, but that’s how I understand it.

The girl at the beginning is a spirit and is stabbing her own grave when we first meet her. She was compelled by Tok to burn down the village just as Alongs spirit was possessed to burn her own home as a spirit after she died. In Malaysian folklore it is apparently common for children to be vulnerable and targeted by evil spirits.

As far as the hunter he is thought to be the spirit Hantu Pemburu as he is listed as Pemburu in the credits. To be honest I didn’t look much into this part, but it’s apparently a ghost known in Malaysian folklore. Also when we him impale the boy at the end he is actually now a ghost. I believe he actually stabs a deer at that point and from what I saw that’s not a good thing in Malaysian culture. At the end when we see him with Tok he is also some kind of ghost.

Anyway hope that helps! I loved the movie and like the two of you I was confused after watching so I tried to find out as much as possible.

    1. I didn’t know any of this. I feel like knowing this would make a second watch much more interesting. Thank you for doing the work for me! This definitely warrants a rewatch.

I’m a huge fan of foreign horror, probably because I’ve watch tv with subtitles since forever. Any newish ones you recommended?

      Thanks for listening!

      1. Same here. I went in blind and only looked it up after. I was also a bit confused after watching.

I’m a huge fan of foreign horror as well. I don’t know which ones you have seen already, but I’ll try to give some under the radar ones. Ones I really liked were The Advent Calendar, The Columnist, Chhorii, Tailgate, Bulbbul, Kandisha and Good Manners. Hopefully there are a least a couple there you haven’t watched and you end up liking.

        1. I also really liked Advent Calendar, Kandisha, and Good Manners. I’ll check out Bulbbul. Have you seen Impetigore? I really enjoyed that one.

          1. See I knew you would’ve watched a lot of those. I like a ton of international films, but I feel like not everyone likes a lot of them that i do, so wanted to give you some of the best lol. Yes I love Impetigore! I love The Medium too which I know made yours and Watson’s lists.
