  1. Ratings of 4, 1, 0.5 ! As Bill would say, “Come On!”
You guys were Waaay too harsh on this movie, but I found the show entertaining as always.
I liked the movie, but I was disappointed because I expected more from Oz Perkins (I enjoyed his previous work very much). This is a 6.5 for me, which is enough for me to give it another chance.
I heard from the director he intended this movie for a younger audience as sort of an introduction to these slow-burn style movies (Like the Witch). I can appreciate it more knowing they tried to do something different with a PG-13 Horror movie, but I don’t know if kids/teens have the patience for a movie of this style? I was getting a bit impatient with it myself, but it kept me curious how this would culminate (even though we know how the story/tale ends).
The movie had lots of imagery which I loved and considered creepy and unsettling, which is where it gets most of my positives.
My main problem was that I didn’t feel anything for the characters, I didn’t feel sad nor worried for Gretel nor Hansel, even though I should have given their situation.
    Not a terrible movie.

    1. Hi! I see your point. The movie has a lot of imagery alright, but you know what? It’s repetitive. We were watching a review the other day and I noticed something that bothered me, but at first I couldn’t point out: in most (maybe all) shots, there’s something centered right in the middle. That made it incredibly repetitive and boring. What’s the use of good visuals if they keep doing the same thing over and over?
I understand he wanted to make films like The Witch approachable to a younger audience… but, I honestly think this failed miserably. I don’t even think this film can be compared to The Witch at all. You are talking about a movie that has different layers of horror, from an actual witch to the mentality of the people of those times, in which a suspicion could get a girl killed, to a film where you can’t see a thing, everyone sounds like they’re from different places, and the only person who inspires any kind of reaction is the villain.
Honestly, if I had given it more for the visuals, it would have been only a 2. And unfortunately, I’m not a fan of previous movies of Perkins, so there’s that…
      Thanks for your comments!

  2. I just found this podcast late last night. So great to have you back!
I totally agree with Bill and Lady on Halloween 2018. It’s my favorite franchise and i though the story and editing were atrocious. Even the first time I watched it I was thinking, “Oh No. This is terrible. They did everything wrong!”
Catching up on your shows now.
Great job here. May it live beyond the grave!

    1. Glad you like our show, welcome to the party!
So, Halloween… yeah. And then we’re already seeing so much about the new one. Sigh. I guess we’ll see.
      Thank you for commenting!

  3. I love this podcast. Even though you had to pay sit through a movie you did not enjoy, you are all able to put together a really fun episode anyway. It really is a shame, but we can put this behind us and move on to a better February. Although, the reviews have not been kind to Fantasy Island…

I agree with everything you had to say. It’s a 2/10 and a strong avoid. I am disappointed that you don’t like John Carpenter’s The Thing as much as I do. As far as any new films being developed, I would hope that a capable director would take on the project. It does have potential for sure.

I saw Pledge last year, but it did not make my lists for best of the year or honorable mentions. I recall it being an average movie with unlikable characters and weak story. It was put out by IFC if I am remembering it correctly. I’ll have to re-watch it for the next episode and see if my initial impressions of the film have changed in a year. That will be interesting.

    1. Hehe… what can we do, we are fun! Lol!
I for one am looking forward to Fantasy Island. I guess we’ll see…
