Relic was my #11 for my Top 2020 Horror movie rankings, but, if I’m honest with myself, it might just be my #1 . This movie made me cry. I never cry with horror movies, it’s something that happens only with dramas….but this got me good. It made me think of my grandmother who suffers from dementia. She has completely forgotten who I am and everyone else who doesn’t live with her. The idea of never being able to hold a meaningful conversation with her or talk about all the memories I have with her makes me very sad. My grandmother raised me along with my mother, so it is devastating to see that she is just an empty shell, and that she only sees me as some random friendly stranger and not the grandson she loved so much. Needless to say, this movie stuck with me, and it’s one I am excited to see and dreading to see again. This movie may not be scary in the conventional way, but the idea of forgetting all your loved ones and all the memories with them is terrifying to me.
My friend,
I am genuinely sorry to hear about your grandmother. I’ve never gone through anything like that, and man oh man… I can see how Relic would hit you in the feels HARD. The film is absolutely horror in that existential sense, and I’m saddened to know that you relate to this all to well. Hold those good memories close, brother. They’re the real treasures of this life. Much love, buddy.
