The Wizards of Oz… sigh.
Jay of the Dead, I remember your ‘The Terminator’ is a slasher idea from HMP, and I just listened to your segment on Land of the Creeps podcast #221. Before I can agree with you there are two important objections I have:
‘The Terminator’ is not a slasher because it has a science fiction plot, not a slasher movie plot. ‘The Terminator’ is about the war of humans vs machines in the present and future timelines we see throughout the movie. We see time travel, different scenes from the present and future timelines. Can you name examples from the slasher genre that have a plot like this? I don’t think you can because slasher movies generally have very simple plots, mostly to set up creative violent scenes of the killer/monster dispatching victims. In slasher movies the emphasis is on the ‘kills’ and their simple plots facilitate that. ‘The Terminator’ is not like this at all.
‘The Terminator’ is not a slasher because the Terminator doesn’t slash, he shoots. I know you talked about this in your Land of the Creeps message, but I wasn’t very convinced with the pointy bullets are penetrating like pointy knives logic. Bullets don’t slash, so not a slasher.
The T-800 might look a little bit like a duck, but no, I don’t think he quacks at all, not Michael Myers at all. The parallels that we find between these characters are real, and, yes, we can go down your list. In the end, though, I don’t think they amount to much when we look at the bigger picture.
If you want to go deeper on this topic we can compare the Terminator sequels with slasher movie sequels.
Also, ‘Jaws’ is not a slasher movie either.
